Our Story

A vision to craft ethical fine art jewellery

Coral Covey was founded and established in 2014 in Munich by Australian jewellery designer Laura Deakin.

In November 2017, after living and working in Munich for over 13 years, Laura re-located back to her hometown of Melbourne.

The name, Coral Covey, is the unity of Laura’s two grandmothers, Coral McKissick and Gladys Covey, who were both important influences in the designer’s life, and taught her the importance of caring for her community and environment.

Coral Covey is a business committed to sustainable jewellery practices. It is Laura’s goal to continue making a positive environmental difference within her field of bespoke art.

Meet Your Maker

Laura Deakin is an established Australian contemporary jeweller, fine artist, gold & silversmith, photographer & illustrator.

Holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours from Monash University and a Masters of Fine Art from the Munich Art Academy, she currently practices as a fine artist in her field of contemporary jewellery. In addition Laura is a lecturer at RMIT University’s Gold & Silver Smithing Department and, in collaboration with fellow artist Blanche Tilden, she teaches the Blak Design courses at Koorie Heritage Trust.

With over two decades of professional experience, Laura Deakin creates for the love of making. She takes pride in every aspect of her work and pays attention to every tiny detail.

With a deep understanding of her artform, coupled by her innate ability to capture the essence of a personal story and translate it into wearable art, each one-of-a-kind piece is expertly designed and hand-forged in her Melbourne studio.

Laura is a certified member of The Gold & Silversmiths Guild of Australia.

This respected organisation has a comprehensive system of cataloguing precious metal artwork.
Guild member’s names and marker’s marks are permanently recorded and their work can be traced and dated
for valuation and authentication.

Workshops

Thanks for your interest in my Ring Making Workshops. These are a really fun way to make your own wedding bands or make a ring for a friend.

For this particular workshop we need two half days of approx 3-4 hours. I will guide you both through what is possible, and then I assist you in carving the rings for each other.

– In the first class, we will meet at my workshop in The Nicholas Building and I will size you both and teach you both the art of wax carving the ring to the correct size.
– 2-3 weeks later, at the second meeting, you will learn to file and finish the rings together using classic jewellery techniques, tools and materials.
– You are not required to have any prior skills, materials or tools.
All of this is provided for you.

My price for the two half days is $790. Please note this is for both of you and that these are weekdays, however this does not cover the cost of the rings.

The price of the ring itself will be determined by three factors:
– material
– finger ring size
– band thickness
