Coral Covey Jewellery Care

Firstly, congratulations on your Coral Covey piece! To keep your jewellery looking its best for years to come, we recommend removing your rings before any of the following activities:

• Gardening or cleaning – You run the risk of losing your ring in the garden, or knocking it while doing dishes. Household chemicals should be avoided with sterling silver jewellery or any plated surfaces. 
• Applying beauty products – Makeup, lotions, perfumes, shampoos, and conditioners can leave residue on your jewellery resulting in dull looking gemstones, and wear away surface plating over time.
• Swimming in the ocean or other bodies of water – Fingers can shrink in cold water, making it easy for rings to slip off and become lost.
• Playing sports or going to the gym – Knocks and impacts can dent metal and damage gemstones.
• Sleeping – Bedding fibres can catch underneath claws, potentially lifting them.
  
  

Engagement Rings & Wedding Bands

Your ring is likely made from 9ct, 14ct, or 18ct gold (rose, yellow, or white) or platinum. These precious metals are durable and will not tarnish or change colour over time. However, they are still precious materials and relatively soft, so will naturally develop scratches through everyday wear.

To minimise excessive scratching and dents, we recommend removing your ring during activities where it may be knocked or subjected to impact.

If your piece features a precious gemstone such as a sapphire or diamond, it is important to remember that while these stones are extremely hard (ranking 9 and 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale), hardness refers to resistance to scratching, not breaking. Gemstones can still chip if struck hard enough, particularly around the girdle (the outer edge of the stone), so please wear your ring with care.

Cleaning Your Ring

If your gemstone appears dull over time, it is due to a build-up of dirt and oils. To restore its sparkle:

• Place your ring in a small bowl of warm water with a drop of mild dish soap.
• Allow it to soak for approximately 10 minutes.
• Gently scrub around and underneath the setting with a soft toothbrush (a bamboo toothbrush works well).
• Rinse if required, pat dry with a soft tissue or cloth, and finish with a polishing cloth.
  
  

Rhodium Plating

Your white gold, platinum, or silver jewellery may be rhodium plated. Rhodium is a surface coating that enhances the brightness and whiteness of the metal. As it is a surface treatment, it will naturally wear away over time. While the lifespan varies depending on wear, approximately one year is a common timeframe.

To help extend the life of the plating:

• Clean gently using only a polishing cloth. If a deeper clean is required, use warm soapy water and a microfibre cloth.
• Avoid exposure to chemicals such as chlorine, bleach, lotions, and other beauty products, as these can accelerate wear.

Rhodium plating is purely for aesthetic purposes to make your piece look extra white and bright. If you would like your piece re-plated, please contact Laura via email.

Sterling Silver

Sterling silver jewellery will naturally tarnish with time. Keep your jewellery in its box when you are not wearing it. The natural woollen felt will reduce the likelihood of tarnishing. However, if your piece has tarnished, you can return it to its original lustre with the following options:

• Wear it more. Wearing a piece will naturally polish it.

An easy cleaning process:

• Place the jewellery in an aluminium bowl (or line a bowl with aluminium foil).
• Fill the bowl with hot water.
• Add equal amounts of salt and baking soda (e.g. one tablespoon of each).
• Let it sit for about five minutes.
• Stir occasionally.
• Rinse and rub dry.
