Ying first reached out to Coral Covey after discovering Laura’s work on Instagram and feeling drawn to the natural forms and hand-carved details. After nine years together and with plans to marry soon, it felt like the right moment to start shaping something meaningful. Ying wanted to begin the process herself to take some pressure off her partner, Martin, who was living in London at the time.
From the outset, Ying had a clear sense of direction. She wanted a ring inspired by nature, reflecting their shared love of being outdoors and in the mountains, alongside her own connection to the ocean.
With Ying based in Sydney and Martin in London at the time, much of the design journey took place remotely. Their initial consultation was held via video call with Laura. When Ying later travelled to Melbourne, she visited the Coral Covey studio to view the gemstones they had discussed, while Laura shared photos and videos with Martin so he could remain closely involved from London.
Once Ying confirmed her stone selections, Laura passed the design details on to Martin. From there, they planned a secret element for the ring. Martin shared the story of one of their first hikes together, Roy's Peak in New Zealand, and requested for the mountain range to be incorporated as an engraving.
Laura hand engraved a mountain scene inspired by Roy's Peak on the inside of the band, alongside “You are my peak,” handwritten by Martin and laser engraved to preserve his exact writing. This detail, along with the final delivery, was organised privately with Martin, so Ying would experience the finished ring as a surprise.
The ring itself is a hand carved, custom-made design with a symmetrical form and nature inspired detailing. It was made in 18-carat yellow gold using 100% refined and recycled material. It features a teal Australian trillion cut sapphire, flanked by two Australian champagne diamonds. The colour palette is warm and natural, with greens and golden tones throughout.
The top third of the band is embellished with hand carved ferns, leaves, and shell-like forms, referencing both mountain landscapes and the ocean.

This ring came gift packaged in a wooden box made by the New Zealand team at GIVE. These guys make special bespoke wooden jewellery boxes for Coral Covey from sustainable forest woods with care, quality and workmanship.
Laura also includes an authenticity certificate with every ring, detailing the carat and quality of the precious stones and metal as well as special care instructions.
Customers who were interested in this item also viewed the 'Marking New Shores', and the 'Three Stones, One Story' ring.
