Ruth approached my stall at the Rose Street Artist Market one sunny Saturday. She was interested in a special custom made piece and she knew exactly what she wanted.
Lately Ruth had been reading about our Indigenous Australians and their way of life over thousands of years on this sun soaked continent. She had become enthralled by their use of the land, their customs and culture and one particular plant had resonated with her, the native Yam Daisy, or ‘Murnong’.
This sweet yellow daisy and its root were used by Indigenous people as a prime source of food, which sadly came very close to extinction due to White colonisation and the introduction of cattle, sheep and goats.
I really enjoyed my chat with Ruth at the market that day. It was lovely to hear her speak with such passion on this subject. She had seen the custom pieces I made Three Strong Women and Engraved Gem and wondered if I might be able to use a similar technique to illustrate the Murnong onto a silver pendant. We decided a long, fine chain would suit this pendant and I think we were right. It was one of those pieces I felt really proud of. Thank you Ruth.
