Tim worked with Laura via video call and email to create a surprise engagement ring for Chloe, thoughtfully refining the design from interstate while keeping the project entirely under wraps. Having connected deeply with the ethos behind Coral Covey, he wanted the ring to feel personal, artistic and reflective of the life they have built together.
Their shared world became an important point of reference throughout the design process. Tim described weekends spent hiking, travelling, listening to records on Sunday mornings, working on their home together and recently adopting two kittens. Chloe’s love of Australian flora and her work as an ecologist also naturally informed many of the details incorporated into the piece.
The final piece was hand carved in 18-carat classic yellow gold, crafted from 100% recycled and refined material. The design balances asymmetry with a soft organic structure, drawing subtle inspiration from native Australian seed forms including eucalyptus, gumnuts and banksia.
The central stone is a 1.19ct freeform parti sapphire from Rubyvale, Queensland, displaying shifting tones of blue, green and yellow. Surrounding it are a collection of asymmetrically placed accent stones, including a green Australian sapphire, white diamonds and an Australian champagne diamond, set in varying setting styles.
Hidden inside the band are a series of symbolic engravings chosen by Tim: an earth referencing their travels together, a bicycle marking the years they spent living in the Netherlands, a gumnut for Chloe’s connection to Australian flora, and a small cat paw print in memory of a much-loved family member.
This piece was made using 100% refined and recycled 18-carat yellow gold. You can find out more about the importance of using recycled materials here.
