A Special Ring from Kalam to Rachel

A Special Ring from Kalam to Rachel

Kalam proposed with a Magic: The Gathering card. That alone tells you everything you need to know about these two.

They met in Canberra in high school but only found their way to each other four years ago — when the timing was finally right, the way it so often is with the people who were always meant to be together. Rachel is a creative writer with a Masters, now working at Taylor & Collins. Kalam is a bricklayer. They love board games, Triple J's Hottest 100, seeing friends, and have the kind of relationship where doing the supermarket shop together counts as a romantic outing. They came to Laura through a recommendation, knowing they wanted something unconventional — a ring with a fantasy edge, a little asymmetry, and details that belonged entirely to them.

At the heart of the ring sits a stunning 1.17ct freeform pentagon parti sapphire from Rubyvale, Queensland, hand-cut by lapidary Scott Langford. Its blue-green colour shifts with the light in that particular way only Australian parti sapphires do — never quite the same twice. On either side, an asymmetric pair of flanking stones continue the story: a radiant-cut and a pear-cut Australian blue-green parti sapphire, each held in organic claw settings that grow naturally from the band. Leaf embellishments adorn the sides of the setting, with stars woven into the leaves — a nod to the fantasy and wonder that runs through this pair's whole world.

The band itself is hand-carved in 18-carat classic yellow gold from 100% recycled and refined material, with a high-polish finish with a half-round profile, clean and wearable and made for the long haul.

And tucked inside, a surprise Kalam kept just for Rachel — a trail of bees travelling around the inside of the band. A nod to the wattle of their Canberra upbringing, to the small and wonderful things that mark a life, and to the idea that even the most ordinary moments — a supermarket run, a game night, a quiet evening — can be full of sweetness when you're with the right person.

Congratulations, Kalam and Rachel.
