Family of Hearts Ring

A unique ring to represent a one-of-a-kind family.

I met Elaine and her beautiful family at a friend’s wedding. Some weeks later she contacted me to discuss the possibility of me designing a ring that would symbolised her family. We spent time chatting via Skype and email, talking about what jewellery she liked. I did some sketches and discussed the different materials that I can work in. I really enjoyed the process of talking with Elaine and working closely with her to finalise the details of what she was looking for. My challenge was to bring these together to create a ring. I adore this part of my profession. Being able to work closely with great clients to create a piece that they will treasure for a lifetime.

Elaine loved the hearts, so I decided to create four of them to represent her family. Two small ones in 18 carat yellow gold, connected to the band,  to represent her children; and two larger ones in 18 carat rose gold to represent her and her husband.  Each of the hearts is unique, all created in one movement, never to be created again – the perfect representation of her family.

With the assistance of a professional caster, I cast the two materials separately and soldered the two types of gold together. Sometimes the most classic and simple designs can be the most powerful in their symbolism.

Workshops

Thanks for your interest in my Ring Making Workshops. These are a really fun way to make your own wedding bands or make a ring for a friend.

For this particular workshop we need two half days of approx 3-4 hours. I will guide you both through what is possible, and then I assist you in carving the rings for each other.

– In the first class, we will meet at my workshop in The Nicholas Building and I will size you both and teach you both the art of wax carving the ring to the correct size.
– 2-3 weeks later, at the second meeting, you will learn to file and finish the rings together using classic jewellery techniques, tools and materials.
– You are not required to have any prior skills, materials or tools.
All of this is provided for you.

My price for the two half days is $790. Please note this is for both of you and that these are weekdays, however this does not cover the cost of the rings.

The price of the ring itself will be determined by three factors:
– material
– finger ring size
– band thickness
