A special gift from Mum & Dad

Amanda & Peter contacted Laura to talk about making a custom ring for their daughter. Bridget was turning 21 and her parents wanted to give her a statement piece that she would treasure forever. Laura emailed a selection of videos displaying different stones, so Amanda & Peter could choose their favourites.

This stunning Australian Parti Sapphire has a really special ‘free-form-cut’. This is where the lapidarist (the person cutting the stone) is able to cut the sapphire in an organic way and does not conform to traditional, classic cuts.

With care and attention, Laura has taken this stunning sapphire and set it into 9 carat gold. She has used an organic setting with soft edges to offset the angular form of the stone. The setting consists of six prongs with a light base to allow as much light as possible to filter through to the stone so that it can sparkle. Set in 100% recycled 9 carat classic yellow gold, the band is a high half round.

This sapphire was fossicked (unearthed) and hand cut in Rubyvale, Australia by Scott at Langford Gems & Lapidary in the quaint little town of Harndorf, South Australia.

Laura packages all her custom rings in a handmade wooden box made by the New Zealand company GIVE. These guys make beautiful bespoke wooded jewellery boxes for Coral Covey from sustainable forest woods with care, quality and workmanship.  Each piece also comes with their own special care instructions.

If you would like to choose your own stone to be custom set into a ring, get in touch with Laura to arrange a meeting.

Workshops

Thanks for your interest in my Ring Making Workshops. These are a really fun way to make your own wedding bands or make a ring for a friend.

For this particular workshop we need two half days of approx 3-4 hours. I will guide you both through what is possible, and then I assist you in carving the rings for each other.

– In the first class, we will meet at my workshop in The Nicholas Building and I will size you both and teach you both the art of wax carving the ring to the correct size.
– 2-3 weeks later, at the second meeting, you will learn to file and finish the rings together using classic jewellery techniques, tools and materials.
– You are not required to have any prior skills, materials or tools.
All of this is provided for you.

My price for the two half days is $790. Please note this is for both of you and that these are weekdays, however this does not cover the cost of the rings.

The price of the ring itself will be determined by three factors:
– material
– finger ring size
– band thickness
